How to Renew Your U.S. Passport

For purposes of this article, any reference to "U.S. Passport" means the U.S. Passport Book (as opposed to the U.S. Passport Card).

Requirements to Renew Your U.S. Passport by Mail
You can renew by mail if your current U.S. Passport meets all of the following requirements:
- Is undamaged and can be submitted with your application
- Was issued within the last 15 years
- Was issued when you were 16 years of age or older
- Was issued in your current name or you can legally document your name change
If you do not meet all of the above requirements, you must apply in person to renew your U.S. Passport.

Filling Out Form DS-82
Step 1: Complete and print Form DS-82
Make sure that all of the information is entered and completed correctly. You can fill in your information on the computer or print out the form and write in pen. However, if you use a pen, make sure to write legibly.
Step 2: Sign and date the Form DS-82.
Step 3: Submit Form DS-82 and all additional documents.
Additional documents include:
- your most recent U.S. Passport (book or card)
- 2 passport photos
- Current passport fees

How to Renew Your U.S. Passport by Mail
If you meet all the requirements listed on the previous page, you can renew your U.S. Passport by mail. You can renew your U.S. Passport from inside or outside the United States. However, each process is slightly different.
To Renew Your U.S. Passport From Inside the United States:

Things to Keep in Mind:
- Passports renewed by mail in the United States may only be mailed to United States and Canadian addresses.
- If you are behind in child support payments, you may not be able to get a passport. You’ll have to check into your state’s child support laws for further details.
To Renew Your U.S. Passport From Outside the United States:
- U.S. citizens residing abroad (except those living in Canada) should renew their passports at the nearest U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate.

How Long Do U.S. Passport Renewals Take to Process?
You may choose to elect routine service or expedited service in renewing your U.S. Passport. However, the U.S. Department of State charges an additional fee for expedited service. According to the U.S. Department of State, the time that it takes for U.S. Passport renewals to be processed is as follows:
- Routine Service: As of May 19, 2009, routine renewal applications take approximately 4 – 6 weeks from the time of the application.
- Expedited Service: As of May 19, 2009, expedited renewal applications take approximately 2 – 3 weeks from the time of the application.
Passport processing is considered complete when the passport is ready to be picked up by the applicant or when it is put in the mail to the applicant.
NOTE: Customers who apply for a renewal by mail must clearly mark "Expedite" on the outside of the mailing envelope, for the Expedited Passport Processing times to accurately apply. U.S. Passport Photographs
You must submit two (2) photographs in order to renew your U.S. Passport by mail.
Your two (2) photographs must meet all of the following requirements:
- Identical
- In color
- 2 x 2 inches in size
- Taken within the past six (6) months, showing current appearance
- Full face, front view with a plain white or off-white background
- Between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head
- Taken in normal street attire:
- Uniforms should not be worn in photographs except religious attire that is worn daily
- Do not wear a hat or headgear that obscures the hair or hairline
- If you normally wear prescription glasses, a hearing device, wig or similar articles, they should be worn for your picture
- Dark glasses or nonprescription glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable unless you need them for medical reasons (a medical certificate may be required)
