President Lincoln's Republicans Take a Loss (1862)

On November 4, 1862, the election was over, and President Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party were very disappointed by the results.

The Democratic Party proceeded to gain seats in the North, particularly at the state level. The Democrats unseated the Republican governors of New York and New Jersey. Further lost was the legislative majorities in Illinois, Indiana, and New Jersey. And finally, a total of thirty-four Republican Congressmen were unseated by the Democrats.

This was a significant event in our time because it was the first time that the Republicans lost seats in Congress since the inception of the party.
